February is heart health month. Would you know what to do though if someone’s heart stopped. Would you panic or would you be able to jump into action here? So, we have Greg Mostello with Rapid CPR Houston, TX here and you actually have a class, which I took on what to do if someone’s heart stops. So this is an easy way that someone can learn not to panic.
Right, exactly CPR is a way to try and buy time. So, if someone does have a cardiac event or is potentially collapsing for whatever reason you may not know it at that moment, doing CPR trying to help buy time until the emergency medical professionals can arrive on the scene and take over. You’re simply just buying time until they do so.
Yeah, and you have a great class that’s only a couple of hours and you walk out and you realize its a little harder than I thought it was going to be, like with how much strong I need to be. Where do I put my hands? What is this thing?
Exactly, doing CPR. The mechanics is very key. To help save lives, trying to get to that individual in time to help them, time is very important as well as what to do and actually how to do it. Doing compressions is the best thing to do when trying to save a life. When I’m talking about doing chest compressions, I’m talking about getting arms together of course right here at the nipple line of this victim and I’m simply pushing down on the chest. There by squeezing the heart and pumping blood to the rest of the body.
This class is good because you can read about that, but then actually doing it with the dummies really helps you understand. How fast does that have to be? How hard am I pushing here?
Exactly, these mannequins tell us as far as the noises that we want to hear to make sure we’re going the proper depth as well as little flashing lights that tell us the speed, the cadence if you will. We want to see two green dots as we do these compressions. That means I’m going the proper speed, the proper rate, the proper cadence.
The good thing about the class is that they are very small. So, your hands on, you get one on one instruction. You’re also teaching us things like what if baby? Here’s something my boss can attest to. I came back an asked where is our A. E. D. Machine? Because even if you know how to use it, you need to know where they are.
The A.E.D. (automated external defibrillator) helps jumpstart your heart. Just like you jumpstart your car, you jump start your heart. Rapid defibrillation which is what this A.E.D provides. A. E. D. provides the quickest way to get the abnormal heart rhythm back a normal heart rhythm. The quickest way we know how is through this method.
